A tale of tribes

The tribe gathers in the cave that gives both light and warmth...and relative safety from the rival tribe somewhere outside. And perhaps, in that breathing-space, even gives a glimpse of hope. For it is time to pool the knowledge of the scouts, to decide what to do next. But the prospects are not especially rosy: The quarry they seek is unpredictable. They are still learning its ways.

As they chatter and squabble, they will cover the cave's walls with depictions of their quarry. The colors are bold and bright, with a dynamism to the lines that commands a respect beyond their child-like lack of skill. Passion and creative expression so tightly fused so always do, regardless of individual taste in art.

One of the tribe has acquired a new tool and shows it to the others. They know that it will help the tribe, though they cannot hide their jealousy. But the tool-bringer is not selfish nor particularly boastful, so their envy is not bitter. And they know that time wasted on envy will allow the quarry to elude them still--perhaps even benefit the other tribe. That cannot be allowed to happen; the tribe must prevail.

Two teams of programmers are (independently) charged with creating an iPad application. None of them has worked with the platform. The team ("tribe") in question meets in the sunny out-of-the-way conference room whose walls are dry-erase whiteboards. Since the last meeting, one team mate has picked up an iPad, which helps clarify both the constraints and possibilities. And so the design and plan of attack are refocused, even renewed.

Plus ca change, hey?
