If you're looking to scope out a potential customer/employer/competitor and the company is publicly traded, you can consider your tax dollars well spent in the SEC's second-generation "Oscar" tool. The link for viewing "Insider Transactions" is particularly useful as a "Who's Who" for both inside the company as well as who's pulling the strings from the outside.
